Inari with Hasselblad 907x 100c

In our first day in Inari, we woke up and decided to go for a walk early in the morning when the sun was slowly climbing up.

We wanted to check the surroundings before heading for breakfast. It was such a pleasant scenery, everything white covered with snow.

We were struck by the beauty of it all. Then my wife asked “don’t you want to go back and get your camera?”

We were staying at these houses. The glass roof is for aurora watching at night.

I was not in the mood to take photos when we stepped out of the door, but that snowy landscape changed my mind.

I picked up the Hasselblad 907x 100c and the tripod.

The conditions were not easy. It was a cloudy day and the snow exacerbated the lack of contrast.

Still everything looked so interesting and beautiful.

We were actually standing in a frozen lake. The photos of the snowmobiles and the bobsleds were taken near the shore.

Then we decided to head out to the lake to get different views.

That’s when we saw these areas not covered in snow, where we could see the frozen water of the lake. It had a blueish colour that attracted us.

But then suddenly we heard the ice cracking. We panicked and stepped back!

There was probably no risk of cracking it all and falling to the water, because otherwise I assume there would be some kind of warning sign?

Anyway, didn’t want to push my luck!

On our second day. Woke up and repeated the routine of taking a walk and enjoying the snow before breakfast.

Weather was much better now and perfect for the Hasselblad.

By the way, I forgot to mention. As you probably know, the 907x is a camera with a unique user interface.

With my gloves on, I found the touchscreen to be very easy to use with its large buttons to change aperture and shutter speed. This really is a great camera.

Just like with every camera, the good weather brings out the best of its image quality. But even more so with this Hasselblad!

My wife never misses an opportunity to dance…

But then, you need to know coming from where we live it is not common to find such gigantic empty spaces with no one around.

Under such weather conditions, the RAW files coming straight out of the camera look perfect and don’t need to be edited.

I love the deep colours, the smooth gradations and the clarity. There is light fall-off that can be corrected in post-processing, but I like the character it gives to the image.

I used to have a love-hate relationship with my Hasselblad 907x 100c because I’m not a big fan of post-processing RAW files. I don’t appreciate the time spent in the computer working on it.

But if you get this camera, this is something you have to accept. Depending on your shooting conditions, the RAW files most often are underexposed and dark.

I’m not sure why it is like this, but this is a question for Hasselblad to answer, not me.

The good thing is, you can be sure every bit of information and detail is captured by the sensor. It’s just a matter of playing with the Brightness and Shadow Fill sliders and voilà, the photo looks great.

This one took some effort in post processing: Shadow Fill to brighten up the dark areas, White Balance for the correct temperature between the lamp (right) and daylight from the window (left). Then Recovery to bring out some details from outside the window. And finally, the appropriate Brightness level and a bit of Vignette. All done in a matter of minutes using Phocus 2 in my iPad.

Hope you enjoyed. More to come from this same camera in Helsinki.

Stay tuned!
