Fuji GFX100RF in a Cloud

1/125, f/4, ISO 400. Acros film simulation.

A short post.

My wife and myself, we recently headed up to Yangmingshan mountains in Taiwan for a short break. The Fuji GFX100RF came with us.

However, instead of the lush greens and blue sky that I was expecting, we actually spent two days living inside a massive cloud.

In short, weather was shit.

Over two days and 13 hours of hiking, we covered 30 Km across several peaks. There was rain and the fog was ever present, from start to finish. It was thick, you could cut the fog with a knife, as we say in Portuguese.

Black & White

Looking through the EVF at a world of flat, featureless gray, I had to pivot. I switched my mindset entirely to B&W. From Provia to Acros.

With no decent color, I decided to play with the fog. Tried to see it as the protagonist.

Trees and branches can be skeletical and haunting. There’s a reason why scary cartoons feature dark forests with frightening looking trees.

I looked for an eerie, mysterious atmosphere.

Torture Test

While we were armored in waterproof trousers, windbreakers and ponchos, the GFX100RF took the brunt of the elements. I can now confidently say its weather resistance is no joke. Despite hours of rain and 100% humidity, it worked without a single flaw.

No fogging, no glitches, just pure performance.

More to Come

I’m currently working through the files. Medium format RAWs from two days of shooting like this require some “darkroom” patience to really pull those subtle tones out of the mist.

I’ll be back soon with a follow-up post featuring the final images and more details on the technical side of shooting in the clouds.

Stay tuned.
