Fuji GFX100RF: new thoughts

In my previous posts I expressed some disappointment towards the Fujifilm GFX100RF.

I was not happy with the outputs.

Too flat, too clinical.

Those were my initial comments.

But I have a different view now.

Today I found my recipe.

This is photography at present. You need to learn how to extract the best from a camera’s RAW files.

And after some time playing with Lightroom, I realised the default lens corrections was the culprit.

By default, Lightroom rectifies the lens distortions, chromatic aberrations and…

Lens vignetting.

Oh.

Blame my incompetence for not having this sorted out before.

I found today by not applying lens vignetting correction the photos look much better.

Because I like the natural vignetting caused by a lens. It gives character to the photo.

And no, it’s not the same as applying it in post.

Playing with Lightroom, I also confirmed how good Fuji’s standard PROVIA colour profile is compared to Adobe’s default.

I’ve been a fan of PROVIA ever since I bought the X-E2, my first Fuji camera.

PROVIA gives you the best skin colours. Period.

So my recipe is quite simple.

Uncheck lens vignetting correction.

Use PROVIA colour profile.

Adjust the Shadows slider to bring out some details.

A simple recipe because good food needs no seasoning at all.

Ready to enjoy this camera now.

I’m a happy man.
