
The Voigtländer Bessa T is a purely analog film camera — a barebones machine with absolutely no bells and whistles. It lacks any kind of automation you would find on a modern digital camera.
If you come from film – like me – you know immediately how to operate this camera. No complicated manuals are needed because you know exactly how it works the moment you first hold it in your hands.
Call yourself a photographer if you are able to pick a Voigtländer Bessa T and start shooting immediately .
If not, then you are not a photographer, just a gadget junkie.
Camera body
The layout is as simple as it gets. What you see is exactly what you get.

On the left side of the top plate, you have the rewind lever to pull the negative film back into its cartridge. Underneath this you have the ISO selection dial.


On the right side, you have the shutter speed dial, the shutter release button and the film advance lever.
At the front, there is one and one button only, with a red dot nicely painted at the center. That’s the lens release button. In case you missed, the Voigtländer Bessa T is an interchangeable M-mount camera.

Oh, there are two peepholes as well. More on this later.
The bottom plate is as clean as possible. There is a round opening for the button cell battery that feeds the light meter. And the typical small button you need to press to unlock the film advance mechanism when you finish your roll and pull it back to the cartridge.

An intuitive, 3-light interface
On the back of the camera, you get three small lights to check your exposure. The camera features no automatic exposure mode, but it does have a built-in light meter.


The interface is highly intuitive:
- Green light (middle): Correct exposure.
- Left red light: Underexposure.
- Right red light: Overexposure.
I really appreciate this design. It represents communication at its best. There is no extra data or cluttered information — just three simple lights. It’s low-tech analog, it’s simple, reliable and efficient.
The missing viewfinder
Also on the back of the camera, you will find a small peephole. It looks like a viewfinder, but it is actually the rangefinder focusing window.
Why is it just a rangefinder mechanism and not a viewfinder?

Because this camera has no built-in viewfinder at all.
Yes, you read that right. This is an M-mount camera that features a built-in rangefinder mechanism for focusing, but no internal window for composition.

To frame your shots, you must attach a corresponding external viewfinder to the cold shoe matching your lens’ focal length.
While some might see this as a shortcoming, to me, it is what makes this camera special.


I have been shooting this body with two lenses: a Leica Summicron 35mm and a Zeiss Biogon 21mm f/2.8.
To frame them, I use an Olympus VF-1 and a Fujifilm 21mm/28mm viewfinder that I happened to have in stock.
Mechanical simplicity
This beauty requires no large batteries; it only uses a tiny button cell to power the light meter.

Even if that battery dies, the camera remains fully functional. The shutter mechanism is purely mechanical.
If you find yourself without a battery, you can easily keep shooting using the Sunny 16 rule or just your own experience.

Modern tech bloating
The Voigtländer Bessa T is incredibly slim. Partly because it has no viewfinder, and partly because film cameras have no complicated stuff inside. Just the negative film that is this thin layer compared to a digital sensor and its paraphernalia of supporting electronics.

It makes you wonder why modern cameras have grown so large, heavy and thick. Digital cameras require deep bodies to house sensors, massive batteries, and complex electronics that require heat dissipation.
The three-step shooting process
If you want a camera that slows you down, this Voigtländer Bessa T will slow you down even more. Because it lacks automatic metering and a built-in viewfinder, every single shot requires a deliberate, three-step process:
- Focus: Look through the rangefinder hole, aim at your subject, and align the superimposed images to achieve manual focus.
- Expose: Adjust your aperture and shutter speed until the middle green light turns on.
- Compose & Shoot: Move your eye to the external viewfinder, frame your shot, and fire the shutter.
Using it
I recently took the camera on a short four-day break to Thailand to put it to the test. I loaded a roll of Fujifilm Superia X-TRA 200, which proved to be an excellent choice for Thailand’s unpredictable weather. I encountered everything from intense, strong sunlight to heavy downpours – and everything in between.

The first thing to note is just how small and portable this camera is. It was incredibly easy to take it everywhere.
The rangefinder mechanism worked perfectly. Through the peephole the images were very visible and easy to super-impose. Both images actually have slightly different colours, one clear and the other one yellowish. Not sure is this is a deliberate thing to assist your focusing or just an aging problem!.. In any case, it helped.
As for the three lights in the back of the camera, they are bright and you can see them clearly while looking through the viewfinder. I guess this is the reason why the lights are in that position. It’s clever. Thus, in theory, I could adjust exposure by changing aperture and shutter speed while composing.
However,
If I have any complaint at all, it is that the shutter speed dial is not that easy to turn. It’s too hard for my liking and difficult to operate at eye level when you are looking through the viewfinder.
What Actually Matters in Film
During this trip, I paired the body with the two lenses mentioned before: the Leica Summicron 35mm and the Zeiss Biogon 21mm f/2.8.



Since this is not a digital camera, I’d say your lens is the single most important factor determining image quality. For a film camera body, the performance criteria are remarkably simple. Well, at least for my kind of slow photography… I only need three things: a body with no light leaks; an accurate light meter; and accurate shutter speeds.
These are relatively basic standards for any camera body to meet. As long as the camera performs these mechanical duties flawlessly, it will not get in the way of the final image.


As I was shooting with high-end lenses from Leica and Zeiss, I can only be satisfied with the final results, which you can see throughout this post.
What can I say… Film is so different from digital and I like the grain, the imperfections and, in this case, the subdued colours from the Superia stock.
36 shots for 4 days
As a hobbyist, the photography experience is incredibly important to me. I don’t shoot professionally. I bought this camera to refresh my workflow and step away from the immediate, clinically perfect output of digital sensors.
Playing with this analog camera brought back wonderful memories and forced me to slow down. I packed exactly one roll of 36 exposures for the entire four-day trip.

In the digital world, 36 shots is nothing. In film photography, a single roll for a short break is a perfect constraint and reasonable.
It forced me to appreciate each frame. Making every frame count. I carried the camera with me constantly, but I only removed the lens cap when I felt a scene was truly worth shooting. Only then would I go through that methodical, three-step shooting process.
The last frame
It was the last day of our trip and, funny enough, I had one frame left to shoot. Weather was extremely good so we headed to the beach for this one final shot.
It was a textbook situation: the sun was directly behind me, projecting a beautiful, warm golden light onto my wife’s face. In the background, waves broke against a vibrant sea under a clear blue sky. It was a classic, if slightly predictable, composition, but it offered the perfect test for the camera.
I had the 35mm Summicron attached. As this was the final frame on the roll, I wanted to make absolutely sure I got it right. The entire process took longer.
I wanted some bokeh, but the lens’ max aperture at f/2 would overexpose. Too bright a scene. The camera’s fastest shutter speed is 1/2000. So I dialed it in and started closing the aperture until the green light signaling the correct exposure would turn on. When it did, I closed the aperture further to slightly underexpose – an old school trick to get stronger colours.
After nailing my focus and exposure, I stood there framing the shot and watching the rhythm of the waves. I wanted to time the shutter for the perfect wave shape in the background. My wife had to hold her pose patiently for over a minute while I waited.
When the perfect wave finally rolled in, I pressed the shutter.

This was a precious, fully engaging experience.
If I had been carrying a digital camera, I would have fired off 10 or 20 frames in continuous mode, gone home, picked the best wave and deleted the rest. All in front of the computer. I would have barely felt involved.
Shooting that 36th frame on film made me feel deeply connected to the process. Regardless of how the final print turned out – in fact framing was not ideal due to parallax error… – that creative engagement was the real reward.
It reminded me exactly why I got back into film.
Final Thoughts
So about this Voigtländer Bessa T.
To be completely honest, a built-in viewfinder is undoubtedly more practical than an external one. The only reason I chose this specific camera model was budget: my first choice was a Voigtländer Bessa R4A, but I found it too expensive for this experimental return to film.
The Bessa T, with no viewfinder, a separate rangefinder window and no automatic metering, was the most affordable entry point.

But now, after using it, I am incredibly happy I bought this body instead of the R4A. The R4A features automatic aperture-priority metering. Using a camera that handles exposure would have been far less fun.
It would have stripped away the slow, therapeutic pace of the full manual process.
So my verdict about the Voigtländer Bessa T is simple: this is a small, portable, reliable and mechanical, no-bullshit, camera. It is perfect if you want to return to film, slow down and shoot an M-mount rangefinder, a small camera without the bulk of an SLR.

It is also highly economical. If say, you buy any other M-mount camera, chances are you will spend several times more. There are some classics out there worth considering, like the aforementioned Voigtlander Bessa R4a (or any other R series for the matter), the Konica Hexar RF, Zeiss Ikon ZM… I checked them all.
Or you can go all the way and get a Leica M6. My point is, you will spend significantly more money. Of course, if money no object and you appreciate beautiful looking classic cameras, Leica or not (like I do, but I care about my money as well…) then go for it and get burn some cash.

But in film photography, I guess it is wiser to save money on the camera body and invest it into high-quality lenses instead. Get some sharp and beatiful Leica lenses and you will be rewarded. Or a Zeiss, which is different but equally good as well.
As for me right now, this setup with the Bessa T and my German primes is perfect.
